Ipswich, (postcode district IP1) is located in the county of Suffolk, Eastern England, within the region of East Anglia. Located four miles west of Kesgrave, the waterside town falls under the county council of Suffolk. Ipswich is situated about 10 miles away from the estuary of the River Orwell and the town has long been the key port for the area. It is surrounded by two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)- the Suffolk Coast and Heaths, and Dedham Vale. 


Getting Around Ipswich

The town is both on the Great Eastern Main Line railway from London to Norwich and the A12 road. Ipswich is 67 miles north-east of London, 45 miles east- southeast of Cambridge, and 40 miles south of Norwich. It is also on the East Suffolk line to Lowesoft, the Felixstowe branch line, as well as on Sustrans’s National Cycle Route 1 and National Cycle Route 51. The port of Felixstowe is a major container port 12 miles to the east.

Ipswich is an hour away from Stansted Airport, 40 minutes from Harwich International Port and  Norwich is 1.25 hours away. Cambridge is 1 hour away while Felixstowe is just a 30 minutes drive away.

Ipswich is a non-metropolitan district and a large settlement despite its town status. The town itself is divided into several quarters- the centre of the town is home to the town’s retail shopping and historical heritage of an excess of 650 listed buildings. The waterfront is located south of the town centre on the bend of the River Orwell and is a picturesque setting, housing the town’s impressive marina. The waterfront is also home to the University of Suffolk which was formed in 2016.
